Read the column here (it&#039;s free to read for all - no pay wall): https:\/\/thenewdaily.com.au\/finance\/consumer\/2021\/05\/30\/ubereats-skills-shortage-australia\/ Let&#039;s connect on social media: LinkedIn https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/simonkuestenmacher Twitter https:\/\/twitter.com\/simongerman600 Facebook https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SimonGerman600 Instagram https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/simongerman600 If you are interested in commissioning demographic research for your organisation, please reach out via: https:\/\/www.tdgp.com.au\/ If you need a speaker for your next conference or a boardroom briefing please reach out via: https:\/\/www.simonkuestenmacher.com\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"lL img-responsive\" style=\"max-width:100%;width:640px;margin:5px auto;\"><\/div><\/p>\n<p><strong>So, we raided the pantry for quite a bit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This means we really just filled all the jobs, as much as we could, with the people that were available in the pantry.<\/p>\n<p>That worked for a while, so we actually drove the unemployment rate down quite a bit. <div class=\"adplugg-tag\" data-adplugg-zone=\"the_sentiment_campaign_body_\"><\/div><\/p>\n<p>I leave it to the economists to argue whether 4% or 5% levels of unemployment should be considered full unemployment in the Australian context.<\/p>\n<p>But we are now already in many industries - hospitality and tourism come to mind at first -\u00a0 in a situation where we cannot fill jobs, where businesses cannot grow, simply because there is no skilled labor available.<\/p>\n<p>My big call out here, to Australia as a whole, is that we need to start to learn how to cook for ourselves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If the UberEats app isn't working, we simply need to cook for ourselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That is fine; we will never be able to cook enough that we can fill the demand for all the jobs.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is very crucial that very quickly Australians get used to filling the jobs that we need right now to drive up the economy, to boost our recovery efforts.<\/p>\n<p>That means that we particularly need people in middle-skill jobs.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-153918 img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.propertyupdate.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Skilled-job-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Skilled Job\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.propertyupdate.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Skilled-job-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.propertyupdate.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Skilled-job-800x532.jpg 800w, https:\/\/cdn.propertyupdate.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Skilled-job-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cdn.propertyupdate.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Skilled-job-1040x692.jpg 1040w, https:\/\/cdn.propertyupdate.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Skilled-job-1536x1022.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cdn.propertyupdate.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Skilled-job.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These are the trade jobs, the manufacturing jobs.<\/p>\n<p>And because we have no migration at the moment to fill those jobs, it is actually a very unique opportunity for lower-skilled Australians, people who work in so-called low-skilled or unskilled labor to upskill by getting into a TAFE.<\/p>\n<p>This is an opportunity for them to gain a qualification, that then allows them to work in these middle-skilled jobs, that we so desperately need to actually fulfill and build all those infrastructure programs that are budgeted for, that the government put money aside for.<\/p>\n<p>But at the moment there's no way we could fill all those jobs, so we do need to upskill our low-skilled workers into middle-skilled workers very fast.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TAFE is the key to doing this.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Therefore TAFE in my eyes should be universally free, no questions asked.<\/p>\n<p>Give free public transport to all the TAFE students as well.<\/p>\n<p>Take all the barriers away, all the hurdles away that people might experience when entering TAFE.<\/p>\n<p>Right now is a crucial time in Australia\u2019s history to upskill our low-skilled workers so we get the middle-skilled workforce strengthened.<\/p>\n<div class=\"adplugg-tag\" data-adplugg-zone=\"the_sentiment_campaign_mobile_\"><\/div>\r\n<div class=\"adplugg-tag\" data-adplugg-zone=\"the_sentiment_campaign_desktop_\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australia went in no time at all from worrying about high unemployment rates due to COVID, to facing a big skills shortage.
