Good networking can really make a career.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>If you want to be successful, then knowing the right people and getting them to help you when you need it is absolutely vital.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s not easy because good networking requires skills and subtlety.<\/p>\n

Most people know this, and so they go about trying to network with as many people as possible.<\/p>\n

But this isn\u2019t necessarily good networking.<\/p>\n

There is a bit of a subtle art to the good networker, so if you\u2019re doing the following, then you\u2019re on the right track.<\/p>\n

1. You know, less is sometimes more<\/span><\/h2>\n

People often try too hard to work a room.<\/p>\n

They will spread themselves thin and talk to everyone in attendance, reasoning that they can\u2019t be certain which ones will be able to help them.<\/p>\n

That is true, but I\u2019m in favour of the targeted network<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Tip: <\/span>Determine the people you have the most in common with and seek them out. Don\u2019t try and speak to everyone just so you can feel like you\u2019ve been successful.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n

Maybe you only speak to three or four people, but that is OK if they\u2019re the right people for you.<\/p>\n

Speaking to fewer people also allows you to have more substantial conversations with those you do talk to, which leads to deeper and more worthwhile connections.<\/p>\n

2. You ask questions<\/span><\/h2>\n

We\u2019ve all been stuck at the party talking to the person who will not stop giving us their resume.<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s important to draw attention to your attributes while networking, there are subtle ways you can do this.<\/p>\n

One of these is by asking the person questions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Note: <\/span>It allows you to find common ground, and it gives the other person a chance to see what kind of communicator you are.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n

It\u2019s also highly effective.<\/p>\n

People always remember talking to the person who asked questions and stimulated conversation rather than the person who talked at them.<\/p>\n

3. You keep it low-key<\/span><\/h2>\n

When you\u2019re trying to win someone\u2019s approval, it can be tempting to go in for the compliment,t hoping they\u2019ll be flattered.<\/p>\n

Tip: <\/span>Only give a compliment if you mean it.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n

Successful people aren\u2019t stupid, and they know when someone is just flattering them for the sake of it.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t win people\u2019s respect by giving them endless compliments, or at least not the right people!<\/p>\n

4. You mind your manners<\/span><\/h2>\n

You may have hit it off with someone while networking, but be careful not to become overly friendly with them straight away.<\/p>\n

You may be tempted to treat them like your mate, but remember that you don\u2019t know at this stage what that person\u2019s values or morals are.<\/p>\n
